Alloy Wheel Widening?
I know you can get steel wheels widened by banding, but can the same be done for alloys? And is it legal?

Not legal for steel wheels and highly dubious (technically) for alloys.
I certainly wouldn't get in a car I knew was fitted with 'widened' alloy wheels

I've seen steels done before but alloys IMHO would be a HUGE NO NO
If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

I cant see any reason why you would need to, given the huge range out there and if there is a tyre there is whell to fit it to, but not the other way
round!"

I thought it was legal to widen steely's? There's a website that will do steels.
The reason I ask is I've got a set of alloys I like but they could do with being a bit wider. Plus finding wheels wide enough for my PCD that
won't cost me a kidney is proving difficult!

'Banding' steel wheels is not illegal. However, should your banded steel wheels cause an accident, then they are illegal!! And
you'll get battered with the big law stick.

if you read Allan Staniforths book called hihg Speed Low Cost then he talks about getting wider wheels. He had already gone down the route of banding
steelies *see note below* but decided to get some new alloys cast. So him and some mates clubbed together and got a few sets cast. If he could do that
in the 60's then surely us lot should be able to do the same.
** as far as I can tell there is no law that makes the practice of banding steel wheels illegal. The wheels are not E or TUV marked, so therefore are
not considered illegal if modified. I think where the problem came from was when it was popular every man in his shed thought he could do it, and
proceeded to, and some of the crap that was put on the road did lead to accidents. So the popular belief was that widening them was stupid and also
illegal. In practice there is nothing wrong with doing it, if done WELL.

I agree. Consider the area of weld compared say to the bits that hold a wishbone on, that everyone is happy to do/trust.
Also, consider the fact that the assembly will be subjected to a 100 percent NDT while in service - If a weld develops a crack, the tyre will go
down.

Yes yes, I know his one is dragged out of retirement, but what's the latest? I too have the same problem as the OP, in that I need but cannot
find any cost effective wider rears hat match the fronts.

Im using 205 gti alloys on my build & remember seeing a company that widened them if you wanted, kind of like a set of split rims but with the
alloy centre cut from the 205 gti wheel.
Heres a picture if the above doesnt make sense
 
Wdened peugeot alloys
Mgt be worth some research ?? I cant see why these would be 'Unsafe' ??

I will keep researching though because im sure there was a company that would turn 'your' wheels into a similar type of thing.
After all, it only needs some standard split rims & a lathe large enough to cut the alloy rims off your alloys & bolt onto the split rim

Here is a picture of one of my wheels after shotblasting, i have always liked them, kind of like a modern minilight design.
 
All clean & Blasted
If you like the standard wheel in my picture, just search ebay for peugeot 1.9 GTi alloy wheels, the 1.6 Gti had a different style of wheel but i
prefer the 1.9 version.
