Wheel Alignment settings with slicks

Hi Guys,

Never change 2 things at once! Down here in NZ we have a single seater series called Formula Toyota (probably other parts of the world as well). As a result we have access to heaps of second hand 13 inch front slicks with a set costing less than a round with a few mates at the pub.

So I got inspired and got a set once my 888's were looking a bit tired and thought I should get the corner weights done at the same time. Result front lowered and camber and I guess toe altered. The guy who set them suggested I should not get a full alignment done, but not much use at 5:30 the day before I head to the next sprint meeting.

Anyway, to much camber I guess as I could not break with out locking half the time and left a trail of blue smoke into evey corner.

Won a free wheel alignment at the track last weekend which was handy (an suprising since I almost over shot every corner!). It is for a local tyre dealer who will probably have no idea what I should set it up to. Same as me really.

If I go for 2.5 neg Camber, about 9 caster and 0 toe does that sound about right for track and slick. The car is not currently road registered so track is the only play ground I can use.

Any suggestions, much appreciated.

Although I am no expert, to really undestand where you are with camber you need a track session, a friend and a tyre temp thermometer. Measure the tyre temp inner, centre and outer as you come in from a session and aim to get the tyre temp even across the tread .

Thanks Guys,

The Hand-ometer at the weekend suggested the out side were still cold or at least far cooler than the inside, so that points to to much camber. So what I have now is the starting poing and will bring it back. Would not be surprised if it is 4 degrees looking at it, which is obviously way to much.

Makes for really intesting braking. But even bring my break points back I ran on average 0.75 seconds faster on average with the slick over a 3.33km circuit

Do you know anything about the slicks? Radial and Cross ply tyres have totally different camber requirements, so you need to have an idea about the type of tyre to give a good starting point.

Suffice to say, -4 deg is too much regardless, but the tyre temp gun is your friend when setting camber.

They are radials. Michelan S308. S308 is about the only marking i can actually find.

Spoke with a local race prep shop who did my corner weights and he suggested starting with 1.5 camber, 4 deg caster and 1 deg out toe.

Got it set up locally using a free voucher I won last meet and just found he looks to have altered the camber mostly by winding out the rod ends on the ends of the top arm rather than the ball joint. Now very concerned there may bot be much thread left in the arms.

Meant to be on the track this afternoon, but looks like going to need to get this checked to be safe.
