Panda 4x4 rear axle?
really simple question, what is the distance between the inner edges of the rear tyres on the escort, I have had the sudden urge to use the rear axle
off a Fiat Panda 4x4, I know they are bullet proff and weight about the same as a transit trackrod end. I am also thinking of using the F.I.R.E.
engine as a base as it is also very light, revvs to about 8000 in standard form and can be tuned to about 80BHP using bits off various Punto'seven
when using the original 999cc. I still have to sort out the gearbox choice. (also the dash comes complete and ready to use)

The Panda axle is very narrow and so may be unuseable, rear track is 49.2 inches, Escort is 51.0 inches, you may get away with it depending on the
wheels you use. What's the gearbox from the Panda like? Can you just block the front driveshaft holes?

Thanks for the reply, I thought the axle would be narrower, but I know the 4x4 uses a severe amount of inset on the wheels so I might get away with it
if I use different wheels with a bit more offset (it looks like I am only looking for 0.9" per side, and perhaps spacers would help). I really need
to know the distance between the inner edges of the tyres on a mk2 escort rear so I can check that it will be suitable.
The gearbox off the 4x4 would be utterly useless as it is a transverse unit with a puch daimler sterr bolt on bit to drive the rear axle. I will have
to find a box to adapt. Possible a type 9 ford with alot of work or a fiat 131 using the bellhousing from a 2x2 panda/uno. I you are using an escort
rear axle, can you get your tape measure out!

Are you sure the axle is strong enough?they certainly look very light but in the original application i would have thought that most engine power went
to the front wheels and therefore they may only be designed to handle maybe 10 or 15 bhp.I thought a reliant axle may be suitable but decided aginstit
for this reason.

Good point, I wonder if the axle was also used in any other P.D.S. application. I cannot believe that a diff was designed for use exclusively for the
4x4 panda. Does any body know?
