brake problem

morning chaps,

got an issue with the brakes, i have done very little work with brakes in the past.

at the moment when i push down in the pedal there is almost no restistance and no stopping power.

if i pump the pedal feel slowly comes back and after 4/5 pumps its back to normal until i need to break the next time, then its back to the same process.

so, air in the system? master?

could well be air in the system or if you have a bit of play in a wheel bearing it could cause this too - pushing the pads out or the brake shoes in too much.

or it might be something else

Try bleeding the brakes. If it improves, it was air.

I would guess its air in the system.

Have you been doing any work prior to having this problem? Was it OK or is this the first time you've filled the system?

1: Could be air - unlikely unless you've been working on the system

2: Discs or drums on the back? - if drums are the shoes adjusted out fully to the drums?

3: Slack front wheel bearing or incorrectly mounted disc - disc run out pushes pads back

4: Stuck slide or piston on caliper - causes the caliper/mount to flex.

Get someone to pump the pedal and watch each corner for excessive movement.

If you have disc rear brakes there is a kown problem with bleeding the rear on some designs of irs due to the bleed nipple on the caliper not being at the highest point of the fluid side caliper.
