Conversion of Peugeot struts to coilover question

A friend asked me to ask this question for him.

He would like to convert the standard strut to coilover by removing the spring pan and welding on an adjustable spring seat. He says the standard strut cannot be dismantled and here's his question;

Does anyone know of a Peugeot 205 strut with a removable insert so that it can be taken apart whilst the welding is done. Thank you for any help here.

the only 205 strut i have ever seen with a removable insert is a fixed platform bilstien, we used to use these on the group n rally car, i stripped one removed the spring platform and weilded a thresded outer on to it to convert it for 2 1/4" adjustable spring.

There is a way to do this without risking the damper mechanism. You'll need a longer length of 52mm OD tube threaded at 52X1.50 (that corresponds with most 2.25" platforms).

Slip the tube over the damper till it touches the bracketry that holds the hub etc in place. You may need to weld a 'guide bush' in place at the top if there is too much play between the tube and the strut outer. (Most 52mm tube you will find for this purpose has a 46mm ID)

All you then need is to substantially tack the base in place where it touches the hub bracket and avoiding the strut tube. This will be enough to hold everything together..

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Mike
