Tightening disc bolts into aluminium hubs

I'm going to fit my discs to my aluminium Escort mk2 hubs this weekend. I believe Ford recommend the hub to disk bolts are tightened to 50Nm, but this seems like a lot when using an aluminium hub. The threaded holes are helicoiled, but I'm still worried they could strip at 50Nm, any advice anyone?

PS anyone know if you can still buy the OEM hub to disk bolts from Ford? Or will it be ok to use some 8.8 grade set screws ?

Just do them up to about an elbows tightness. The wheel will hold them on anyway.

if these are fronts?

On mine they have the steel bit that bends over the nut to prevent it working loose.

Do you have those?

Hi Matt,

Yep they're front hubs, and I've got some locking tabs so Im not too worried about them working loose, but I thought the torque was important to get the correct clamping force between the disc and hub, this might be nonsense though :-)

Cheers,
Jek

I dont think thats a lot considering you could do about 10NM with an allen key. If your not already doing so go for some loctite and maybe a spring washer which is what i did to mine although they are cortina based ally hubs but i imagine they are pretty similar

The bolts are 10mm or 3/8" dia so I would guess 32 to 35 lbFt would be just about Ok in aluminium --- not far off 50mn ------ make them 40nm

Normal HT set screws will be OK --- I would use a stainless grade because you already have a mixture of materials light alloy, cast iron and the helicoils will be stainless.

Make sure you know what exactly threads are used in the hubs -- don't assume they are metric.

Not on Escort Mk2 hubs it used the traditional setup.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try 40Nm and see how it goes.
