LSD + drums - driveshaft question!
Hi all,
Despite trawling the searches on various forums, I can't find an answert o this question:
If I have a drum+open-diff donor Sierra, can I fit an LSD and Lobro bolt-on driveshafts, retaining the hubs and drums from my donor?

I dont think so, lsd-disks, open-drums,
As far as i know anywho?
How hard can it be?

The LSD has no room in it for the push in shafts. You have to have bolt on shafts. Open diffs have the room for either shaft type.

I have seen on here that you can convert between the two - take the drive shaft from one type of diff (push in), made a mod and fit it to the other
(bolt in).
Except whilst i've read the theory (once) i'm not aware of anyone doing it.

works fine
take off the slide in joints from the end of the drive shaft, and fit bolt on joint (you can buy new ones from motor factors really cheaply)
I have done this on custom driveshafts (running disks and slipper), but I know other people have done this with std shafts as well.

i would use the shafts from the disk set up, as you then fit bolt on joints, which is straight forward.
Fitting new slide in joints is a PITA, (especially as slide in joints are not made anymore on their own, but I think instead the whole driveshaft is
replaced on cars.
At least I could not find slide in joints on their own.)
As i had custom shafts, I had to carfully cut the end of the caseing and slide it off. THen slide in new shaft, slide casing back over and tack it in
place with the welder.

My car has drums and LSD. I simply removed the tripode joints from the inner ends of the drive shafts and fitted lobros. Swapped the diffs and bolted
it all up. The inner ends of the drive shafts are splined and in my case the splines fit both tripode and lobro joints.

the question is how big are your shafts?
I believe there are two sizes - except i don't know what they are.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies - no-one has confirmed it in the above posts but do I assume then that the spline on the outer end of a Bolt-On driveshaft is
unsuitable for a Drum hub?
I was hoping all I need to do is take out my open diff and push in drive shafts, then install LSD and bolt-on-inner-end shafts complete, from a Sierra
4x4 for example. Regardless of shaft inner joint type, isn't the outer end spline/joint the same?

Good point Mike R will need to check, I imagine only a certain size will fit the bolt on inner CVs if I do end up having to go hybrid.

I believe you have to do what dusty did and create hybrid shafts. The bolt-on (lobro) shaft outer end intended for disk hubs wont simply fit into
your drum hubs.
