Sierra drive shafts question ...

Are the driveshafts for 108mm flange and 100mm flange the same?

I am building for a new vehicle reg so all the bits need to be new, (or at least invoice to say they are new!)

The only diff that I could get new was a 7.5" which has the 108mm flanges. I am having a great difficulty in sourcing some new 108mm driveshafts. I have got hold of one shaft and I have the CV joints for the other side.

My plan is to use two left hand (shorter) shafts so that I have a narrower than standard sierra track without any cutting and shutting.

I know the hub nuts are handed so I will still need to have left and right hand hubs. Is there any reason why I cannot use two left handed shafts?

If so does anybody have a left hand 108mm one knocking about? And ditto if the 100mm ones are the same.

Using two lhd nuts may result in one side coming loose.

I think the early cars may have not been handed (check haynes manual).

These are bolt on cv's so the handed threads are on the stub axles (I think??)

I plan to use handed stub axles so that the threads run the correct way.

another issue may be gearbox to diff prop alignment, as the diff will have to be mounted with the input flange off centre for you to use two left side drive shafts.

your diff has its output points non central - ie the shorter shaft has the diff output offset to that side to take up the difference in shaft length.

So if you do what you want - you may have to adjust the positioning off the diff.

I have mounted the diff about 25mm off centre in order for the output flanges to be centrally placed.

The propshaft will be running slightly skew but that is no bad thing as it should help to reduce wear in the UJ's

that sounds right to me

I beleve the actual shafts are bigger on the 108mm ones and I think the 108mm ones are only fitted to RWD sierra cossies - everything else has 100mm ones

I've got some 100mm ones I can measure if need be

I think that 108mm shafts were only used on 2WD Cossies and 2.9 ltr Bug'eyed Scorpios.

If mcerd1 could measure his that would be a great help.

I thought the Bug'eyed Scorpios all had 7.5" diffs with 100mm flanges (but I could be wrong)

give me a couple of days to measure them - I don't have them here....

Left hand are 460mm long
Right hand are 503mm long
BMW 5 & 7 series use same 108mm CV joints if you're looking for a different length?
