Steering coupling

I've got the usual mk 2 Escort quick rack, and a steering linkage with a "group 4" coupling welded on at the rack end. The problem is that where the bolt goes through the coupling (to tighten it around the splined input shaft of the rack), the two faces are not parallel, meaning that there will be a tendency for the bolt to bend or otherwise deform as it is tightened up. Not something I want to see with such a safety critical part.

From memory the coupling takes an M8 bolt. I suppose one solution would be to drill out the holes and use something more meaty.

The link is something like the following:

And this is an (exaggerated) sketch showing the profile of the coupling, and the problem as I see it:

I'm sure that lots of you have used these group 4 couplings. Anyone had the same problem? Thoughts on the best solution?

Hi

Profile spacers, (washers), to take up the clearance - easy fix with a bit of 8mm ID tube.

Rally Design sell a better quality item that is made from cast or forged material, rather than poor quality pressed steel.

You could also try reducing the taper on the faces by levering them apart and then clamping them together in a vice with a strip of steel about 6 or 8mm thick between the faces to force them to be nearer to parallel.
