Sierra Diff Seals / Welder Wanted

Bit of a dual thread this one.

First off, I'm trying to replace the oil seals on the side of the Sierra diff. Haynes says "using a screwdriver lever out the seal" (3 spanners!). How big a screwdriver, cause my seals appear to be welded in.........

Perhaps I just can't get the leverage, but FFS they are absolutely solid. Any hints / tips welcome.

Second part is when taking the drive shafts off the rear hub carrier, I managed to snap one of the bolts in the carrier. There is about 10mm of thread showing, so if some kind fella with a mobile weldy kit could pop over, weld a nut onto the stub and we could wind it out, that would be mint.

Cheers

Mike

They seals are a tight push fit as they are pressed home, I use a seal puller which hooks into the seal then you lever it out you can do it with screwdrivers sometimes you will have to break the seal up

Life is like a bowl of fruit, funny how all the weird looking ones are left alone

Something like this:-

Being pressed in, will I be able to drive them in with a "suitable drift" and a big hammer, or am I going to have to take the diff out?

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike

If you take the carrier off and you're down my way anytime - with work possibly etc ??
I'll buzz a nut on for you.
Probably a bit far to make a specific trip - but the offers there.

Thanks for the offer. I'm down in Selby on Monday, so if I don't get it sorted over the weekend, I'll ask you then!

Cheers

Hi Mike

Small flat screw driver on the edge of the casing pointing into the centre of the seal, few taps with a hammer and the seal will fold in, keep gently tapping until its so loose it can be removed with the fingers.

Just becareful not to damage the ali casing, its the seal you want to knacker.

I've got one of the seal pullers and although work the above technique is better on dif seals imho.

Cheers

Rich

Claw hammer works for me - done 3 diffs that way with no problems. Be careful though as the seal releases with a pop so make sure you don't chin yourself with the hammer handle.

You can knock the new seal in nice and square with a square block of wood approx 2"x2".

Oh forgot to mention, good idea to measure how deep the original deals have been seated down, and then knock the new ones down to that depth.
