Cleaning a blockfollowing big end failure

I'm currently rebuilding a red top that suffered a big end failure and seizure on cyls 2+3 following a total loss of oil pressure.

What's best to use to clean out the oilways etc. before I rebuild?

Just plain water? Brake cleaner? Gunk / degreaser? Diesel?

Any tips on the best methods gratefully received!

I would use degreaser and lots of little wire brushes.

burton sell some long stiff brissle brushes that you can use to get down all the galleries, the are about £10 a set i think, might be worth a look?

i wouldn't use metal brissles incase they break off and you miss it, then its metal in your engine, not good! stiff nylon brissles perhaps would be better

wont you be taking it for honing if theres been damage to the bore if so the engineering company should dip the block to clean it, you can use parrafin make sure you clean all accessible areas well

no damage to bore, just big ends on 2+3.

There were little shreds of bearing in the strainer on the pickup, i'm stripping and cleaning the oil pump obviously, i'm assuming the filter would catch most of it, but there could well be crap in the oilways.

Spat it's oil out of the cam (dizzy drive Kent cams on injection now and it spat the plug in the cam oilway) and sucked air when cornering at full chat hence wrecked bearings.

If you can knock outt the oil gallery plugs then clean with brushes mentioned above, then rinse out all the gallerys and thoroughly clean the block inside.
You might also want to disassemble the oil pump and clean it. Check for score marks on the interior of the oil pump from bearing fragments.
I had to do this a couple of times to a 427 Corvette engine, it would pump all the oil into the heads and loose the bottom end.

I'd use a pressure washer, preferably a hot soapy one.
