150bhp ish from a £100 2 litre zetec £100 of bike carbs and £150 of megajolt, depending if you doing an upgrade and dont need to worry about
emmisions, 165bhp+ with above plus Diy ported head and £300 of cams

Cheapest mods for a Pinto is to start with a later injection engine, this has a better head and rods, you will need carbs and a 4 branch exhaust, use
a Felpro
1 mm gasket and try a 285 cam.
130+ honest bhp
Zetec usually gives 145 bhp but if you can find a cheap one the ST 170 engine is very good.
To get 170 out of a Pinto will cost thousands or will break

More likely both
I'd plump for 150bhp Zetec, 120bhp Pinto without doing much more than fitting them.
Personally I'd also consider XE (article in this months PPC) or Duratec both of which would get you 200bhp with similar costs on the engine, but
an additional £300 putting them onto a type 9 gearbox. Duratec has the advantage of weighing 2/3 of the others.
Finally the K series on a type 9 or an MX5 engine and gearbox can make cheap and sweet fitments for a 7.

If you get 140bhp at the Back wheels what is the flywheel bhp?

Add 17-20% to the wheel figs. So about 160bhp.
150 bhp from a pinto is pretty easy with a set of carbs and a cam and nothing much else.
You'll get 150bhp from a 2 litre zetec with the right cams and prorammable engine management.

I'd guess the 2.1 pinto should be making 150+ at the flywheel
(the extra 100cc adds a bit torque too)
its hard to say from that description - pinto's make most of the power in the head work, it says ported, but not eactly whats been done
and of course that all assumes that its been put together right.....
pintos arn't the highest performing, but they can still be quick and very simple to work on

I might be worth remembering that a well sorted suspension and clever choice of tyres will give significant better performance increases than chucking
more horses in!

i would say just buy a puma zetec s 1.7i engine they have 123hp i think its about 150hp at the flywheel they, i bought a 97 puma at the weekend and
they are pretty quick, not as fast as my old WRX but for a 1.7i its not bad!

I've got 120bhp at the wheels (the only place it matters) from my pinto with a FR33 cam (cost £83 including the recently refurbed head and
adjustable vernier), and bike carbs (circa £150 including manifold). plus about £150 on the rolling road!!
wish it was a little lighter, but there again i could do with loosing 4 stone myself!

so are we suggesting a pinto is more powerfull than a zetec ??

No, it would cost around the same for 150bhp from either the pinto or the zetec initially. But it would be cheaper to get more power from the Zetec
after that point.

Zetec on injection will also be much better to drive than a carbed pinto for the same peak bhp (a measure more suited to the pub than reality when it
comes to road manners and overall performance).
Plus fuel consumption will be poor on a carb compared with injection.
