so close yet ...... longer steering coupling
Does anyone know of any donors that use the same diameter and spline count as mk2 escort tack but have a steering coupling that is around 500 mm
between centres?
(by "between centres" I mean the distance the indercut part of the steering shaft where the bolt goes).
I've bought shaft from Rally Design and 2 UJs but could need the whole assembly to be longer by about 50 mm.... so close yet ....
otherwise will need to look to sleeving the shaft.
this is the kind of thing I refer to (Mk2 Golf - anyone know diameter/spline count?)
I need to have 36 splines, O.D. 14.0 mm

Cut and sleeve is what everyone does as far as I know.
First time I did it, I was nervous about the amount of weld, so I cut the sleeve at an acute angle to max the weld area and also drilled the outer,
welding up the spots...

Cut and weld is the way to do it. ...........
but if you don't want to I think CBS do the same sort of thing and it may be longer (or shorter).

Reasons for not wanting to sleeve is that I am already sleeving the steering column - not really a good reason - plus I have not found a suitable CDS
tube.
Looking for an I.D of 14 mm (preferred) or 15 mm (I have 2 couplings) and wall thickness of 3 mm.
Wall thickness is based on having same cross sectional area as the solid coupling although I undersand that the central part of any rod adds litte to
sheer strength so I could got thinner wall.
Otherwise need to have a length of extension turned down.
I have the coupling and two cast UJs from Rally design and the knuckle of one UJ has about 5 mm clearance from the chassis rail - too close for
comfort - I don't want to be in situation where it is possible for it to jam against the rail.
The RD coupling is 330 mm overall length but the catalogue states 350 mm - which would have been ideal - so will contact them as to what is going on
and probably need to send it back - £ 80 !!.
So anyone know of where I can buy CDS tube, 3 mm wall with either 14 or 15 mm I.D. ???
