not using a donor steering column

I like the idea of making my own column using a splined shaft running in roller bearings, and with a direction indicator switch mounted on the dashboard. I know some Westfields are like this.

I don't like the look of Sierra columns, and I think it would look neater, and make the wiring easier, to have all the switches on the dasboard (I won't be having a windscreen).

Things is, where can I get a shaft that will run in generic bearings and yet will have the right kind of splines for mounting the steering wheel? I would be using a collapsible boss BTW. I did think of using a removable wheel because they come with a bit you can weld onto a 3/4 inch shaft, but apparently that's a doubtful for the IVA.

But after a period of time, the roller bearings will wear, and replacing them will be problematic??

Dont use the wiring, just use the column?

Get bearings to fit the shaft, not the other way around. Bearings come in all shapes and sizes. I get mine from Brammer.

Arent they generic? My column is off of a sierra and i mounted a removeably wheel boss directly onto it.

As said, you can buy them splined to fit onto the shaft without welding.

I was thinking of bearing like this, I assume they have rollers insided but maybe they are ball bearings, buut that probably doesn't matter anyway

Most steering wheels come with a collapsible boss these days, I know the Mountney ones do, it means you don't have to have a collapsble section in the column itself, as long as the whole steering system is 'protective'

What can you buy splined onto the shaft without welding? Do you mean the bit that takes the removable wheel, cos I don't want a removable wheel, I want the shaft with splines on.

I have a Mountney steering wheel and boss and the boss is not collapsible, it's solid al.al. The splines are not generic, they vary according to column being used.

I think you will have a problem come IVA time with a tailor made steering column, it says in the manual that it must be of an approved standard (marked or documentary evidence

Here's section 14 note 3 from the manual:-
The steering control and column assembly must provide adequate protection to the driver by absorbing energy from a driver-steering wheel impact. This is the case if the steering control has an approval (evidence may be markings or documents), or is similar to an approved steering control. The vehicle should be assessed using the material in Annex 1.

can you reach your dashboard (to turn indicators on) with your harness on?

I can reach the dashboard, I'll make sure of it, and won't even need a long stalk switch because I'll set it all up so the wheel doesnt come out too far from the dashboard to far. I've got a lot of choice over where the scuttle goes etc, and if I find it's a problem I will have an extending back area o n the dashboard to contain the direction and other needed switches like horn, lights etc



Anyway, Ive kept searching and found the answer, it should have been obvious to me, but there you go, exactly what I want, including a lock and keys for £115

and the matching wheel with collapsible boss is only another £80 (I've seen them and they look really smart) so looks like that is what I will be doing.

I too never liked the looks of the sierra shaft.

Vauxhall stuff looks a lot neater.
My mate has a Honda engined Dax that needed an extra u/j to get round the exhaust. He did that with mostly Vauxhall bits,
though he did have to cut one shaft to length and have the end splined.

I followed Uncle Ron's advice for alternatives in "the book" and used the Nova column.
The end is female, so just needs a male shaft with two flats on it, so nice and easy to make. (or get made)
