how to dismantle a costina hub.
one of the many tasks on my list to do is to find the reason why i have a knocking on my front off side. First of all i thought it may of been the
bearings in my striker upper rocker wishbone but now im not sure. It feels like there is movement between the disk and upright but i cant see how it
attaches. I have alloy hubs that bolt on to the disc but cant see any further. Any help or advice? Anybody else with a sylva or striker had front
suspension knocking noise? Common things to check, it all seems tight!?
Thanks for your help

The disc bolts onto the back of the hub which then goes onto the stub axle and is held on by the nut at the front. Take the caliper off, remove the
grease cap from the front of the hub, undo the castle nut under there, off comes hub and disc.

Cortina hubs are simply a large castellated nut on taper bearings. Jack up the car and grip the wheel firmly in the 6 & 12 o'clock
positions. Try to rock the wheel and feel for any play in the bearing. If any play is detected, remove the grease cap and split pin and tighten the
nut JUST enough to remove the play. When you have finished, replace the split pin, grease cap and you're done.

Raz

I had this on my Phoenix. In my case, the top wishbone pivot bolts were not tight enough. JP always uses an undersized Imperial bolt so it is
essential to clamp up very tightly when the car is sitting on its wheels so that the wishbone movement is taken up by the bush and doesn't
swivel on the bolt. Hope that's clear.
If you have actual bearings in the top wishbones then the above will not apply.

Hi
There's a good chance it's in the alloy hubs. They have a tendency for the outer bearings to either settle or on poor quality items wear
in to the alloy hubs.
Are you sure that you have Cortina uprights and not Escort. Not much difference in the adjustment process Etc but if Escort they will be different
bearings if replacements are needed.
Cheers Matt

Just another thought; the pads can rattle.

Do you mean the grease cap? It is a tight push fit so you will have to tap it out with a drift.

Raz

Hi spec calipers? Pads are rattling in the caliper
To check if it is the pads just apply the brake gently , if rattling stops it's due to the pads
