Where do wheel bearings sit on rear hub carrier?

Hi,

When I look inside the (Ford Sierra) hub carrier I see 2 steps on each side. One at 1/4 from the outer edge and one in the middle of the hub carrier.

I need to put the wheel bearings in and I thought I had to push them inside until the 2nd step. But when I offered the outer racer to the hub carrier, it seems that it can only go up to the 1st step.

Where is it supposed to sit? Does anyone have any picture of a hub carrier with just the wheel bearings in so that I can see how it looks?

Thank you for reading! Best regards,
HappyFather

right in to the middle, the outer bit is for the seal

they are an interferance fit, so you wont just be able to push them in with your fingers.
I've heard of folk putting the bearings in the freezer for a while before hand, but I've got a press I can use which makes it an easy job)

Thank you for the reply, mcerd1.

So, using your picture as base, it should go up to the steps pointed by the arrows.

How many hours in the freezer so that it helps out (since I'll be hammering it down with a punch)?

yes, hard against it so that all thats between the 2 bearings is that ridge

they are non-adjustable bearings, so you press in the 2 outer races then grease the bearings and place them in (high temp LM Grease)
then just put it all together and torque the hub nut and your done
(I hope you've got a big enough torque wrench...)

Many thanks to both Dingz and mcerd1!

You may now laught at me... I thought the oil seal was the outer racer, so that's why it didn't seem to fit down there.

So, Dingz link to detailed photo instructions was a life saver to me.

Kid's in bed, no I'm now out to work in the car!
