Indy dog leg steering link

Anyone with an Indy running a zetec found a good solution to avoid the oil filter using a dog leg steering link.

I've been using the small renault 5 turbo filter for the last 4 years and it works JUST, i've noticed with a bit of movement on the engine mounts the shaft does actually touch the filter as the paint has worn away. I'm thinking a better solution to this would be dog leg (uj) in the shaft and know its been done, i just need some info/pics of anyones work for ideas.

Any help with this appreciated.

Hi warren

I've tried the remote for size and and its very close to the renault filter size, i will have a look at robocogs set up as i'm sure he runs a remote. I just think a dog leg would be a better fix, not only for the shaft against filter but for access to the filter when i change it.

It might even be a case of my engine on the mounts is too central as i did read a lot of zetec runners push the engine over a touch.

Hi Bob,

I fitted an extra uj in my Indy column, when i swapped to a zetec.
I now use a filter from a fiesta zetec and could actually fit a full size
mondeo filter.
I bought my shaft and u/j from MNR,though they were not cheap, they are top
quality items.
I will take some pics in the morning if you need them.

The other option [which is probably more difficult] is to cant the engine over a bit by modifying the engine mounts.

I found on my MK chassis that with the mounts that came with the kit, even a remote connection to the oil pump wouldn't have cleared the column link section. Here's my solution, perhaps not the best way but seems to work

I got the extra U/Js from CBS, a length of hex from ebay and the rod end bearing came from http://www.bearingboys.co.uk/

Andy thats a great big thanks from me for the pics, exactly what i had in my head but just needed confimation that somebody else had actually achieved this.

Lee thats fine, as long as it works mate. I've seen that set up before on a couple of other cars on my travels.

I now have the extra UJ and length of bar to link the rack to the UJ so i just need the spherical bearing for whatever size bar i use on the modded link from column to the UJ.

I'll let you know of the progress.

I'm sure one of my local nice friendly locosters will weld up my creation for tea and biscuits.

I tilted the engine slightly (plate under the passenger side engine mount) and it let me get the remote filter head on with just enough clearance.
