Play in sierra column?
I seem to have a bit of play in my steering column, as i can move it up and down slightly, also there seems to be bit of a thud every time i start to
move the wheel.
is this a common problem?
is there something i can replace? or do i need another column?
cheers

i'm assuming you've checked all fastenings along the column? particularly the upper to lower column joint, as this was held in by ford
with an m8 setscrew coated in threadlock.
if not i wonder if the collapseable inner part of the column is loose...

thanks, where about is this upper/lower set screw? as i can't seem to find it.
also it is deffinaly coming from the upper end (steering wheel side) of the column. if it is from the collapsable section, can i tighten it up.
its rather anoyying as it is not a huge amount, but im sure the iva man wont like it.

can you see the UJ joint where the lower column (round) meets a triangular tube from the upper column, and is clamped via this set screw.
hopefully its this, and is an easy fix. the collapasable section (the triangular bit which meets the UJ) should be stiff but move when a lot of force
is applied. up into the sheath of what i believe is called the outer column (just to confuse)

i don't think it is that, i remember doing that up nice and tight, and its deffinally coming from the top of the column, and there is no play
below the bulkhead.
so i think its got to be in the colapsable section somewhere.
ive tightened the heigh adjustable bit right up, and that has made no difference, so its not that.
i think i might need to remove it, and have a good look, but this means removing bodywork

The plastic Ford bearing that is commonly used to support the trianglar part of the column isn't particularly robust, and can give some play.
It might be something do do with that? Something like this:

is a lot more solid. The inner bush of the sierra bearing fits pretty well into the 1"... maybe with a little fettling.

A little update. Ive got some access and noticed that the column was rubbing slightly on the chassis, so have moved the column up higher up.
And also the play seemed to be mostly in the height adjustment mechanism, so ive removed this and replaced with a bolt and done up as tight as poss.
Now when putting pressure on it, there is still a little bit of movement, but this seems to be the chassis bracket rather than the column.
So will get it all back to gether, fit the steering wheel and hope this cures it.
