newbie questions, axle related.
hey peeps, I have been looking at getting a Locost to start a project that crossed my mind a while back.
I have owned a Nissan 200sx for the last 6 years and happen to have a spare engine and box kicking about, you can guess what I want to do with it. Yep
shove it in a Locost. The engine in question is a SR20DET 2L turbo.
with the parts I have available its likely to be pushing 300hp at the fly.
I have found a car local to me but it is based on a Mk2 escort and I don't think the live axle will cope too well with 300 horse running through
it. Is there anything else suitable that I could easily fit in its place?
Is there anyone on here that has fitted this engine that could give me some tips on the problems the overcame?
I can't wait to be a Locost owner, it seems like so much fun.

Welcome to the madhouse. The SR20DET has been used a few times now. This was the first that sprung to mind -

Rally Design or Burton performance Escort group 1 half shafts and diff internals should do it or go gor a Sierra independent set up with a 7
1/2" Cosworth diff.
Other option is a DeDion set up modified for the wider Sierra axle.

Would it not take a lot of fab work to fit IRS or DeDion? Is it the half shafts that are the weak point on the live axle?

The De-dion uses the existing trailing arms and coil-over mounting points on the chassis. The main work will be adding mountings to the chassis for
the differential, and you may have to relocate the panhard rod mounting point.
The English axle is the one with relatively weak driveshafts, but as always if you stop these breaking then something else will break instead. The
Atlas axle is a lot stronger, but also very heavy in comparision; too heavy for a car as light as a Locost really but quite a few people use them.

excuse my newbieness . Does dedion come from an escort? Or something else?
the diff mounting would be fine, I can weld etc and would be ideal as the 200sx diff could be used

The De-dion axles are all custom made for the Locost. They are usualy used in conjunction with a Sierra diff and driveshafts.
