Axle sizes (newbie)
Sure i read on here before but can't find it now, about live axle sizes. is the capri and cortina bigger than the escort? which best? i may do a
+4 chassis but not sure yet.
Been doing some research and reading a lot of the many build sites that people have done. found lots of useful information, and also got myself
confused a few times, so i'm going to have to learn to write stuff down as a plan!
not going to start a build until i have been to the exeter kit car show, and see if i can sit in some. pretty excited, glad to have found this site.
cheers

ah found it, capri is 2inches wider than the escort, cortina is 2 inches wider than capri.
seen a few pics of 'book' builds, on some the rear wheels look a bit far in the arches. i was thinking maybe, book chassis with cortina
axle and then the wider track front to match, or would that look stupid?

Ah! another local!
I have used a Capri, which fits really well to a book chassis, the cortina may be on the limits on a standard chassis, but there are wider plans
available (Mcsorley - excellent).
If you are at the planning stage, think about a +4 chassis, you will have a wider cockpit and more room in the tranny tunnel for fitting all the
gubbins in, wish I had done it !
If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

i noticed there are a few from round this way!
the only thing that puts me off a +4 is having to fabricate the nosecone. but then i'm sure i can bodge one.
so far i'v found a cortina axle for £50

Axle: make sure it's one with a sensible ratio.
Jasper's was from an estate Cortina and therefore 4.1:1. With a BEC this meant a rather high revving, low top speed car!
As for the nosecone- you have a couple of options. 1) GTS are possibly going to make a +4" set of bodywork- but they wanted a minimum of 6
orders before they'd commit.
2) Mount a normal nosecone further forwards. Hicost has done this. It's what I intend to do but then my chassis is under 2" wider at the
nose so it's easy to do!
3) I've been told that Luego do a wider nosecone- not 100% sure if this is true or not though!
A few people have used Cortina or other wider rear axles and kep the front standard width. This appears to work ok.
Hope that helps,
James

We have an axle from 2l Mk4 (or is it 5?) 2.0l cortina saloon. Not sure of the exact ratio but I think it's around 3.41 or something like
that.
u2u if interested.

Another Plymothian! I have the remains of a Robin Hood S7 that I am slowly picking the bones of. That has a cortina rear axle you can have for
nothing if you aren't in a big rush for it.
Also a 1600 Pinto (runs!) and 4 speed box for the taking (need the prop though).
