gear on the way down from 5th.

Both situation sound as though wheels driving engine so possibly movement in engine and box and the gear stick being pushed out by the metalwork
around the top of the tunnel.
If just started to happen look for a week engine or type 9 gearbox mount allowing more movement. Can you make it do it in second?
It the grub screw fully in at the side of the gearbox that is on the detent?

also what oil have you put in, have you recently changed.

I would check the detent screw then is tight and not working loose as it did on mine after rework.

To give it it's correct name in the book it is the selector locking pin and spring.
Here is a pic from book
pinandspring
It is on the passenger side of the box just behind the bell housing near the top.
Reason I suggest this is that I had just had my box done and within not many miles it would jump out of gear on oiver run, mine was first (modified
gearset).
Took the box out to later find the screw holding the pin and spring in was loose and just proud of the casing. Gear changes was very easy with little
effort needed to move it.
With an Allen key I tightened the grub screw in until it locked, this provided more tension on the spring and more effort to remove from gear.
Just a thought of what I found.
