steering rack clearence

i have a new mk1/mk2 steering rack for my haynes locost race car however i cannot get the rack to line up with the colum. in the pictures in the book the steering box sits outside the frame but with my rack its inside.i know ihave the right rack as i bought it from a escort specialist and everything else lines up thanks for any help

doesnt the roadster use a cut down Sierra Rack??

my book says to use a escort rack its a ron champion book if that helps

That actually looks correct for a book built locost, I found that the upright behind the rack was very close to the steering column and had to adjust the angle of it slightly.

im confuesed how am i ment to ajust the angle of the upright wont that make the geomtry of the suspension out? my coloum /rack is way out with the linkage hitting the chasis

I had the same worry but found that moving the bottom of the upright by enough to give clearance for the link made little difference to the position of the top wishbone bracket,I think it is another book error it was about 10 years ago when I was building the chassis so cant be more precise.

i can tell this is going to be fun not im considering getting the adaptor plates for my engine mounts made up and trial fit the engine to see if i can move the colom over a bit to give me the clearence i need

The pinion on your rack appears to be pointing almost horizontally, I don't know how others have done it but my pinion points upwards at approx. 45 degrees. I also have a UJ mounted on to the bottom of the top chassis tubes where your "spare" rack is lying.

I would advise you fabricate a new steering rack mounting anyway as those are book rack mount design is widely regarded as not strong or stiff enough for the job it has to do.
