Differential rebuild

the Diff in my car is goosed, and the car is currently stripped so i figured on the rebuild i would stick in a Rebuilt differential, i just wondered if any body had some advice on where to get one from? or if there are any decent rebuild specialists i can contact? even better if some one has one lying around that would be great! the diff i currently have is the bog standard sierra diff with push in drive shafts. im based in somerset so if any body knows any one in this neck of the woods it would be great!

i see race line offer diff rebuilds at around £350 is this a good price?

In my opinion buying another secondhand diff would be just as good
If you were to insist on a rebuild why not go for a Quaife ATB you'll get a rebuilt diff and LSD as well

When you say yours is goosed what do you mean exactly?

May just be case of adjusting the backlash and tightening the screw caps??

I,m with Coozer, nip out the backlash on the big crown adjusters.

If you have a BEC it will be noisy and rattle.

You can buy bearing kits and seals for around £50, does not help with rattly planet gears though.

Well I did an oil change and the sump plug looked like an Xmas tree, I checked the sump plug 50 miles later and the dump plug was even worse, it's pretty noisy when running and finally the input pinion flange has a lot of backlash, around 10mm either way before the driveshafts start to move, it's that bad you can hear the diff banging when you change gear

How is this done? Mine has started making a knock when taking up the drive, seems to be alright when moving its just that initial movement, could this be what you're talking about?

Cheers

Although lots of people will say 'use a specialist' it's not black magic to do, also with the low mileage that these cars do and the lack of weight you do not need to be as precise.

If you pull off the back cover you can see which way to walk the crown wheel into mesh with the pinion.

First thing to do is adjust the pinion which needs a very long socket, I purchased a standard air socket, cut the drive part off and welded a bit of scaffold pole to extend the teeth for this, maybe £5 and a bit of effort.

To get the castle nuts moving they need soaking in diesel or good penetrating oil for a few days, you should then be able to work them loose with a bar across the teeth, I had to also warm the housing to get them moving. If you hit with a hammer the teeth will break off.

All I did then is move the crown wheel a little out of mesh and tweak the pinion up a little to remove the end float, the nut presses against a crush washer, if you overdo it either replace or place this washer on spike and gently dress the bulge out to 'grow it' a little.

Then twiddled the castle nuts up removing the end float on the crown wheel bearings, now back out a tad

Now all you do is walk the crown wheel into the pinion moving both castle nuts evenly, I wound mine in so the gears loosely bound up then backed off until it spun freely with no tight spots.

Jobs a goodun
