Spax coilovers
Is there a easy way of testings my old spax coilovers.
Taken one off my car and removed the spring to test. They were new in 1995 and have been sat around in a barn for 15 years. Lots of surface rust so
not sure if they are salvageable.

anyone with a shock dyno can check them out for you. Most larger motorsport teams will have such a beast, find someone local that runs single seaters
or GTs and offer them drinking vouchers ;-)

If the Chrome stems are rusty they are scrap, if its just cosmetic and the casings you should be okay.
I would just take the springs off,stand them upright and bounce on them, if they all react in the same fashion and do not simply collapse call them
good.
Nb do they have adjusting screws down the bottom, when I had some 30years ago the difference between a couple of clicks was huge, not the best ones
really.

There is some rust on the chrome and when i push the chrome rod into the coil over housing it slides in (I have to push quite hard) but doesn't
push itself back out. To be honest I'm not 100% sure how new ones should feel hence the reason for the post.
They have a screw at the bottom to adjust the ride.
If they are knackered, does anyone have anything lying around that could fit the bill. The springs seem ok apart from needing a lick of paint) and are
9 inch by 3 inch and have 180 written on the bottom ( could this mean they are 180lbs)

The chrome looks ruined. If you work them in and out is there any trace of oil on the chrome sliders?

Know signs of oil on the chrome sliders but they are very stiff and don't slide in and out very easily.

I do not recall them being gas filled so will not push themselves out.
You have an adjusting screw which will affect the load, only test with them vertical and before you do anything else lightly sand the rust off the
chrome with 3000 wet and dry lubricated with something like wd40, although they do look destroyed to me as well.

Given the chrome a light sand and oil and they seem ok. The screw adjuster clicks when i turn it and firms the action up.
You never know they might do to get me up and running

They'll probably start leaking oil from the adjusters after a trip down't road. They're buggers for it
