7" diff with push in shafts- same but wont fit ??

For the sake of trying to get rid of a bit of diff whine Ive been trying to swap one standard existing 7" diff (non LSD, push in shafts, drums ) for another i got from fellow Locoster gavin174 a couple of months ago.

However the drive shafts just dont seem to fit into the new diff. Pop the ends of the shafts into the diff, bolt everything up, turn the shafts no movement on the pinion flange. Turn the pinion flange and no movement on either driveshaft.

There are some casing differences but they both have the visual teltale bolt bositions of 7" diffs

The tag on the old diff (the one the shafts fit ok) 83bg 4006 cd ts 8 d 9 d 3.62 [which as far as i can see means its a 7" open diff with tripode joints (for drum brakes)].

there isn't a tag on the other diff.

Were there 2 different sizes of splines made for open 7" diffs ? If so how can i make sure i get the right diff that will fit my existing driveshafts ?

there are smaller shafts I have these on my car I think there are 2 models that these came from the 4x4 and the 1.3 I couls stand being corrected. I do know the diff I have will only take the smaller shafts these are a lot smaller than the normal shafts

unfortunately there are at least two sizes of drive shaft. I suspect you just found this out.

My driveshafts have 23 splines, the splined end measure a tad less than an inch in diameter.
