Track day wet tyres????????
Hello everyone,
I've just picked a cheap set of alloys up for my reliant kitten with the intention of fitting a new set of (recommended) toyo proxes
T1r's for wet track day use.
Two of the tyres already fitted with about 2-3mm tread left are Avon Turbospeeds CR28's. Any good in wet????
Two of the tyres already fitted with about 7mm tread left are Nankang EX500's. Any good in wet also????
I've searched reviews and it appears Turbospeeds might be ok in wet, but not sure about the Nankangs.
I struggled in the wet with rear grip with Medium ao48's, but the front didn't understeer or lock and turned in great (mind I was only
going like a snail with cramp) so thought I might stick the Nankangs EX500 on the front and the Avons CR28 on the rear.
Do I try them or get a fresh set. If so what to get. Cheers

In my limited experience of them i can best describe the Nangkangs as ditchfinders!

stick the nakangs on the front then jacko! you definately wont understeer into a ditch and the chances are if you do find a ditch you will almost
certainly go into it backwards!

Yeah, I suppose I need a better wet tyre than Medium ao48's, at least for the rear anyway.

Rainsports are good budget wet, but sadly arent great in dry or mildly moist conditions.

I've got mi ao48 for if its a bit damp and some avon slicks for dry, but just need to know what to do about the potential wet track day tyre
wise.

Just go for some good quality straigt road tyre where heat is not a problem?
You did not mention size but mabe top bridgestone or top mich or top conti?
Track days ARE the best thing since sliced bread, until I get a supercharger that is!

CR28 - Sports are great wet weather tyre, just make sure that is what you have as CR28 Sport and Turbospeed CR28 are not the same.

Other alternatives are CR500 Avons or 021 Yokohama.

Looking on-line the Rainsports and T1-R's are a good budget price, but are the CR 28 Sports a good bit better?
I've spoke to BMTR and they seriously recommend the CR 28 Sport tyre as you Jeff for the wet and good for short hill climbs, but £89.50 each
plus vat and post. I'm gonna get a right bollocking of her in doors if I buy 4 of those bad boys.
At the end of the day if I don't have the right tyres for the track day "wet" conditions then that's also a total waste of
time and money. I had to put the Kitten back on the trailer at dinner time last Blyton after being probably the slowest car on track, I quite like
sliding about, but didn't fancy loosing it on the fast straights as it was very twitchy.

Rain sports are exceptional plan wet, however unfortunately aren't extraordinary in dry or gently damp conditions.

I had a 306 gti6 and when i first got it i used toyo t1r's and thought it was great in the dry and still pretty good min the wet
I then bought a set of rainsport 2's.... they were just as grippy as the toyos in the dry and when it rained they remained just as grippy! from
then on thats all i ever used on it
as soon as i find a spare set of alloys for my mk ill be sticking a set of them on
very highly rated by me, especially at the price!

T1R's were our choice for damp greasy conditions at a sprint at Hethel a year or two back .... Never again.
Spent most of the time sideways. Excellent viewing for the marshals, not so good for my times. The R888's we used after performed much better
in the damp, probably due to the quick heat build up.
I'm go with Rainsports, that's what we'll be using on the Clio next year for wet weather.
