getting my head around slick tyres
Ok chaps I have some 7x13" wheels fitted with 175/50r/13 tyres. I would like some slicks to fit these. Could someone point me in the right
direction as to what size I would require please.
Does 175/505/13 sound right lol
Thank's, Joe

175 radial slick is wider than a 175 road tyre. the (flat) surface area of the slick will be around 175mm not including any sidewall.
505 is the diamiter in mm. 175mm tread width
my radical runs 195/535 front 250/570 rear
depending on camber settings dictates crossply/radial debate and some slicks require much more negative camber than other. dunlop radials rund 3 - 4
deg neg up front. avons 1-2 deg neg. crossplys around vertical or a touch of positive!
ive just had my car set up and asked loads of questions so if you need anything just ask! cheers

I use Michelin 16/53 on 7" rims on the front of my car, and have used 20/54s on 7" on the rear too. I now run the wider ones on 8"
rims.

you can get a data sheet on a competition tyre (slick/wet/inter) from most manufacturers. imho, its better to run a wider rim for the tyre than its
designed for (about an inch) but never a wider tyre than rim as it gives an odd sensation at initial change of direction as the tyre carcass goes
parallelogram.
this is a typical Avon data sheet

youll notice that some tyres are nearly the same 'nominal' size and yet when you look at the actual tread with or rolling radius they are
different. Often reason it one will be a control tyre for a given series (F3, other single seater etc), and they tinker with the tread area to give
max rubber on the road for a control wheel size, and the sidewall construction. A light single seater 300kgs with wings and downforce, will compress a
single seater construction tyre designed for use without wings for instance.

also as Daniel mentioned, radials love camber and crossplys just don't! usually run 1/2 deg neg rear and 3/4-1deg front on hills, but for
circuit use and lots of laps, probably need 1/2 deg max fr on crossplies.
often near zero toe F&R too, they aint a road tyre ;-)

Worth checking before you book, as some TDs dont let you use slicks. No idea if thats enforced tho.

They are radials from a Formula Renault, in good condition. Selling as I have too many sets.
Most track days let you run slicks as long as you have a roll cage, I checked before I fitted mine. Javelins and Circuits days definitely do let you
use slicks.
