MX5-Tight cv joint removal help
Gents,
I thought I was getting better at this sort of thing but the mx5 rear hub is mentally stronger than me or any techniques I’ve tried to remove the
outer cv joint from the hub!
I can’t get the splined section out from the hub!!!! Ive tried soaking it for weeks in penetrant, diesel bath, big hammer, hydraulic press......Only
thing I haven’t tried is heat which I don’t have at home.
The other mx5 ones I’ve done have come out ok!
Any ideas? Failing that does anyone have a pair of the female splined hubs from a mk1 1600 mx5 I can use with my spare uprights. Its holding me up
now.
Cheers
Liam Mc
EDIT
Yes I've unscrewed the hub nut

Stick it in the electrolysis bath overnight. that should do it.

MX5 cv joints seem to live in two worlds. The one world is the Haynes manual '1 star' effort, a gentle tap and they come undone.
The second world (which is where mine live), they are able to resist a 100 ton press. Actually, I should clarify that, the spline fitting resists the
press, the stub axle actually deforms before it comes loose!!
I have heard of a few over at mx5nutz where the axle just hasn't come away from the upright. And as I mentioned, I've designed my entire
rear suspension setup with the driveshafts still attached to the upright!
Coozer's electrolysis bath was a solution that I was going to try, I think about half a dozen posts ago I asked about damage to bearings and
boots, and the consensus was that they'd be ok.

Checking out ANOther forum it's quite a common problem but the steps you've taken are normally the solution.
Try Coozers bath or use a plumber's blowtorch to apply heat.
Failing that see if one of the specialists can suppply you with complete units?

Hammering only makes it worse I have had this with a couple of Honda/Rover joints, luckily both were just be knocked out to change the gaiter so in
the end removed the complete assembly including drive shaft and used a boot stretcher to fit a new gaiter from the inner cv joint end.

I'll try some heat and see if that gets it. They have to come out as I'm havinh custom driveshaft made and need to change the cv.
I do have a spare set of uprights but no hubs. Might be easier to source some second hand hubs than remove the bloody cv!
