English axle diff rebuilt upgrades
As my locoblade isn't currently selling, I'm going to spend some money on her over winter ready to enjoy again next summer (and possible
do a track day or two).
I want to smarten the rear axle up, so I'm having my spare one shot blasted and painted. While I'm at it, I wondered if there's
anything a could/should do to the diff while it's in pieces? I replaced the pinion seal and gasket a few months back, but how about any internal
components? I'm not adverse to purchasing a 'better' diff if one can be suggested. Can anyone identify my ratio by the pictures
below?
I haven't got Quaife money to throw at it unfortunately, but anything that can be changed for either performance improvement or longevity will
be pondered over.
Thanks in advance

Diff ratio, count the teeth on the big wheel and divide it by the number of teeth on the cone shaped wheel it meshes with. If you are luck the number
of teeth on the big wheel may be marked on the perimiter. If the answer is 3.54 then this is for touring and worth wpquite a bit, uf it is 3.77 then
worth quite a lot (aporox £250), most common is 3.89, a true 3.9 is slightly stronger but nit by much, 4.1 and 4.4 are fir accelleratio and from an
anglia.
If you search "English cwp" on the burton site it will give you the teeth combinations.

3.89 is 9/35.

Great info, thanks. Those pictures are from a few months ago, once I've taken it to bits again, I'll start counting teeth!

Save up an put a Quaife in there! I know it isn't what you want to hear, but it transformed my car with a live axle.

Thanks, I've just seen that. Is that a good price?

Assuming the diff and crown wheel are in good condition it's a good price.
Plated diff is what you want aswell, not an ATB.

Thanks Benzo. Without wanting to sound completely daft, what's the difference/benefits of a plated diff?

Why do you say that? For racing or lots of track work then maybe, but I have found my ATB has been fantastic on both Road and track. I am curious
what a plated diff would do better?

I have a plated Tran-x LSD in my axle... and it will be getting swapped over for a Quaife as soon as I have the pennies. Why? The noise does my nut
in, and I like the idea of the 'fit-and-forget' nature of the ATB!
Yep, I get that plated diffs are better on the track, but I'm not a fast enough driver to exploit the performance benefits.
It's Evolution Baby!
