If you've gone for a standard (book dimensions) chassis and wishbones then the Cortina axle is fine. It's 4" wider than the Escort but this is cool as it helps fill the rear wheel arches more- and some think this looks better.
Just check the ratios- the estate may well be a 4.1:1 and this may be a little high for you, depending what engine you're intending to fit.

To expand a bit on what James has said most of us who have used the Escort axle find just a bit too narrow.

If starting again I would either look for a Capri Mk2+ (2 inches wider) or go the Sierra de Dion route.

The Cortina axle is a whole 4 inches wider than the Escort and has a very heavy casing (bad) and stronger difff and halfshafts (good).
Other downside with the Cortina Mk3+ "atlas"/German/Salsbury style axle is that the final drive ratio can't be swapped easily.

Escort and Capri axles can be either English or Salsbury pattern, the English type is a good choice for cars up to about 140 bhp beyond that the heavier duty Salsbury style is the better choice.
