New Build Question
Hi
I have recently purchased an MX5 as a complete car and am currently stripping it apart and selling most of it.
The plan it to keep thinking gear to put into the locost, however from experience is there anything else I should be looking to keep to go into my
build which will save me money in the long run?
The plan was to use engine, gearbox, prop shaft, steering rack and column, gauges, wiring look and potentially seats.
Many Thanks
Jon

Perfect thank you!
I would assume I can buy a fuel tank which would accept the pump/ sender fitting aswell to keep it simple.
Thanks

Hubs, calipers discs, master cylinders?
I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator
headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names
furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours.

I should have probably mentioned i have a ford rear axle so will be using a live setup so no use for the hubs, driveshaft and diff.
Would the steering wheel be ok to use with the fact it is fitted with an airbag?
Thanks

and the steering column - ignition switch - key and loom as later ones have a transponder in the key and without the ECU and decoder box it
won't go on the standard set up (ie they are a matched set of 3 on the NB and later)

Thank you for all the info.
I shall make sure i keep all these bits, box and label them.
I think I shall call on a couple of friends and we can spend a day stripping the car apart then get rid of the shell to make some room to start the
build in the garage.
Thanks

interior rear view mirror
wing mirrors
wheel nuts/bolts
wheels and tyres
coolant hoses
coolant radiator (may be too big to fit in a Locost though)
I kept some of these parts from my donor Sierra, but wish I'd kept all of the really.

The rear view mirror is a good call.
It has a double ball adjustment so fits at almost any angle, up or down to see around a roll bar,
or with a little fabrication upside down.
Generic kit car mirrors are cheap tat and vibrate a lot, and most tin top mirrors are only made for that cars windscreen angle.

I know this is slightly off topic but why are you choosing a live rear instead of independent when you have all the right components?

when scrapping the shell ensure you get (or give and keep a copy) receipt for scrap metal (and
specifically not car), so you can show it has been responsibly disposed of.

Ok will do, thank you I have a local scrap dealer who will take the steel for me, we deal slot with them through work.
In terms of live or independent rear axle, I was advised by a friend that the live would be easier to do. Would you say this is not the case?
I've got a Mark 2 escort rear axle which I have been told is worth a fair bit so could always sell that to raise further funds for the build if
people think that is a better way to go.
Thanks

Don't know what you are trying to build but a live rear axle!!! You have uprights, diff, driveshafts etc from an MX5 why on earth put the clock
back 30 years to an escort live axle. Have a look at the Haynes Roadster book - its a piece of cake independent rear end ( ok its not easy but its no
more difficult than trying to locate a few hundred kilos of live axle thats narrow and from a vintage Ford)

My advice would be to put the running gear into a mk Indy, which are now Mx5 based, it will be more expensive to build but will be worth a lot more
when you come to sell it

Out of interest, do people run the mx5 steering rack with power steering in theirs? Or I know you can use it but without the power part of it?
Obviously with it being such a light car??
Thanks

Most MX5 racks are used without power and to make sure it complies with IVA the rack should be properly 'de-powered'. There are
instructions I have read as to how this is done, I think, somewhere on this forum
