Chain drive diff offset

I am duilding bike engine single seat car.

The diff is a converted mX5 one to chain drive. When lined up behind the engine it’s not central.

The diff type is the old one that the drive shafts bolt on.

Question is would it be ok machining a spacer to mate up the difference. Of get a longer drive shaft on one side?

If the engines central to the chassis then the front sprocket will be way off centre, like most single seaters.
Unequal driveshafts is perfectly normal assuming he diffs not too low in the chassis making the angle of the short shaft too steep!

You may want to talk to Doug at West Garage for advice and parts related to chain driven diffs: http://www.westgarage.co.uk/services/chain/chaindrives.html

Guess you have seen Tony Pashley's book on building biked engined single seaters: https://www.amazon.co.uk/How-Build-Motorcycle-engined-Racing-Cars/dp/1787111695 as well as Allan Staniforth's very useful 'Race and Rally Car Source Book': https://www.amazon.co.uk/Source-Anniversary-building-modifying-competition/dp/0857333488/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1513496750&sr=8-1&keywords =Race+and+rally+car+sourcebook (NB cheaper earlier editions available too)
