Rear Mount Steering Rack Suggestions
Hi All,
I’m building a Cobra based project.
The brakes are now sorted via help supplied on here.
I now need some help with the steering rack.
The running gear is Jag based.
I’ve done away with the power rack and i’m now on the hunt for a manual rack that works from behind the axle centre line.
I have an Escort Mk. 2 rack here but that would work in reverse as it’s front mounted......!
Any idea what racks I should be looking at?
Ideally with the same splined shaft so my old u/j’s fit!
Thanks for reading.

Rover 100 / Metro rack was rear mounted and available without PAS.
Left hand drive escort rack turned upside down?

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I had thought about a LHD Escort rack.
Might be the easiest solution.

If I'm understanding your post correctly then most front wheel drive cars have their steering racks mounted behind the front axle. Many
are/were available without PAS too. Peugeot 205 and 309 cars for starters.

Thanks for all the replies, really appreciated!
I like the idea of the LHD Escort rack, all my other bits and bobs will fit, u/j’s, track rod ends etc.
Can anyone see any reason not to use this rack in this application?
Thanks again.

I built my car using a Lhd escort rack fitted back to front , works fine and I have an EPAs column from a Suzuki wagon to help out as it’s a quick
rack .

If you turn the Escort Mk2 LHD rack upside down will the steering column coupling not point in the wrong direction (and be difficult to attach to)?
If that's the case then surely a manual steering rack that's already designed to sit behind the front axle is the way to go.

I am currently modifying a classic mini rack to use on a ford Anglia. This will work similar to the Milton set up which uses a hilman avenger rack.
Cheap as chips and they also do quick rack versions.

Thanks for all the replies.
In the end I went for the LHD Escort Rack and with slight modding it fitted straight in and works perfectly.
Cheers again.
