RV8 to Type 9

Chaps,

I'm thinking about making my own adaptor for joining Rover V8 to Type 9.

Anyone have any tips about how to go about it.

I've seen people doing bellhousings, but at £200 + sundry items - too expensive, I'm afraid

Is there a particular reason for not wanting to use the rover lt77 gearbox?

If there is a reason then I know Magnum engineering do rover to ford sierra conversion stuff

Magnum: Bellhousing and other bits comes out at £264 and according to them I need a XR4i box £?

LT77 from £125 upwards, and according to RPI they're crap (I had a manual 1985 V8 SD1 and the box went on that).

Quote from their website:

"As you may be aware it has become almost impossible to find a Rover SD1 (LT77) 5-speed Transmission in good condition, in fact we have found it almost impossible to find them even in 'reconditionable condition'. Therefore, if we have an LT77 used for sale, it's spares or repair only even if in seemingly very good order such is our lack of confidence in these older transmissions for modern application/use"

They sell R380 for £900

I have a Type 9 that came free with donor, and don't mind having a go.

As car is so light, I might even consider using an auto. More space in footwell. More relaxed driving.

Depends on responses to query.

If anyone has a v cheap LT77, I might take a chance. Don't really want to start hacking my chassis around now, either.

Don't take too much notice of what RPI say. I know loads of people with LT77's with tuned V8's. Never heard a single one say there's a problem with the box, except maybe less than smooth gearchange. My last 3.9 (226bhp on rolling road) had LT77 no problem.

I sold an LT77 for £120 the other day, doesn't help you I know but gives an idea of the prices. Have a look at the classifieds on http://www.rover-v8.co.uk

Auto with Rover v8 excellent choice. The one to go for is the GM180 as used on the latest SD1's. It uses vacuum to sense when to downshift. It has kickdown cable but you don't need to use it, makes throttle linkage easier

I don't suppose you happen to know which side the starter is on?

My chassis is for starter on left (near side)

Starter is on the offside, as is the clutch slave cylinder which is actually more of a problem. and will affect the chassis dimension more
