+4 wishbones/uprights/brakes

It's just dawned on me that building a +4 with a Sierra back end (dedion) may mean that I'll need to design/manufacture some custom wishbones in order to widen the front track & use compatible uprights/hubs.

I understand the Sierra has a track of about 5.8" wider than book Locost, so I'll need to make the wishbones approx 0.9" longer than book to keep the track exactly the same front and rear. Or is it acceptable to have the rear with a slightly wider track than the front? It's not by much, after all...

What are my upright/front hub options? The cortina uprights (if I can find any!) look nicer than sierra ones, but do the hubs have the same stud pattern (so I can use the same wheels front and back)? Will the cortina brakes work well enough to keep up with the sierra cosworth discs I'll have on the back?

Please excuse my total ignorance here... I've done some searching in previous posts but found nothing that answers my rather basic but specific questions!

it is quite acceptable to have a wider track at the rear than the front, just ask reliant.

Smarts have a wider rear track than the front as does the dodge viper IIRC.

I think that most sierra based 7s are also wider at the rear.

I will give the answers/my opinion as follows...

Yup, no probs there. In fact, *most* se7en types have slightly wider rear track, some more than others. Have a look at some Tigers...

Yup.

That may be a small problem, but not insermountable, depending on exactly what sized discs they are. There are various ways and techniques swing the braking bias in your favour...

Most of the better Locost suppliers make wishbones for wide track cars these or will sell you the bits to make your own.
GTS, MNR and MK are using a much better design these days -- have a look at the websites. I am using plates supplied by Darren very nice they are too.

My front is narrower then rear. If I'm unhappy, I'll change later (much later, like post SVA)

Only prob may be going though gates that just fit the front

Same here, my front track is 56" and my rear track is 57.8" (standard Sierra). My chassis is a McSorley 7+4" with standard book front wishbones. I'm using Cortina uprights (Tip: Remove any forward facing sharp edges from casting before painting! Note to self: Take own advice...)

Both Cortina and Sierra use 108mm PCD wheel stud pattern and you can choose the offset to suit yourself to a large extent.

You can use a Fiat Uno rear brake pressure reducing valve to reduce rear brake bias or use a proper dual cylinder bias arrangement. Alternatively you can fit bigger brakes to the front as the M16 cortina caliper has many aftermarket replacements with bigger vented disks etc. I think the Capri 2.8 litre has compatible vented disks with spaced calipers. Others on the forum will be able to give you more details on this and other options I'm sure.

HTH,
Craig.

I don't want to steal this thread but it's so similar to the questions I need answering............

No. I'll start a new one, saves any confusion.

No need to custom make anything, +4 suspension parts will be off the shelf from GTS in the next couple of weeks.

Its all part of the package we are doing for the W7DE kit.

Kind regards,

Darren
