Zetec Sticky valves
Help,
Have got 1.8 Zetec in my Tiger(still building!!)
I cannot get my engine to run on all 4 pots. The no. 3 does not seem to want to join in!!
When I put my hand over the inlet trumpet on the carb I can feel it sucking in but then blowing back through the carb leaving petrol residue.
I suspect that the exhaust valves have stuck due to lack of running for some time.
I have put correct oil in and have even put some hydraulic valve lifter additive and have run the engine to try and free them up.
What is the best step to take next? Is it worth replacing these specific tappets or do I have to bit e the bullet and remove the head? any advice
appreciated
Ta Stu

Have you Checked the ht leads as they commonly break down usually No 3 first in my experience.
Have you tried a compresion test.

surely (assuming you mean silver top zetec) if it "burns a coil" it will lose 2 and 3 not just 3!!!

Very often a slightly bent or sticky valve won't show up in a compression test ---- leak down test is best but most home worshops don't
have the tool.
With a bent or sticking inlet usually if you hold a stethoscope /heater hose tube to the carb inlet you will hear a distinct poping sound.
I take it you have swapped the pugs over and cleaned the carb jets and also checked the carb to manifold "O" rings are intact.

Thanks all for the response.
Just a bit more info in reply to some of you're suggestions.
1. the coil pack is ok and so are the leads. - I am getting a spark -(bench tested by webcon)
2. The carbs are new and there does not seem to be a air leak around the seal.
3. there does seem to be pretty good compression.
If it is just sticky valves what is the best remedy?
Is it possible to free them with 'gentle persuasion' without removing the head?
cheers all!!

Head off.
Beware of the Goldfish in the tulip mines. The ONLY defence against them is smoking peanut butter sandwiches.
