Duratec - definitive BOM

I know that there is plenty of discussion on using a Duratec.

What I'm struggling with is a definitive list of the "extra" parts needed to deploy this with a Type 9 gearbox.

So far I have :


  1. Alloy bellhousing (Raceline)
  2. Cold start casting (Raceline)
  3. Sump (cheapest option for wet?)
  4. Hydraulic clutch components (Ford)


I've seen other items (like water rail kit) but I don't know if these are "must have" items.

I may be wrong but i don't think the type9 gearbox bellhousing fits all Duratecs but as i say i may be wrong.

I presume were talking about the 4 cylinder latest Ford / Mazda engine (I4).

If so you could consider:

Alloy bellhousing - I don't think theres much choice at the moment (£300+)
Cold start casting - make your own out of 6-8mm ally (£0)
Sump - I fabricated one from steel (£0)
Hydraulic clutch components - Check with supplier of bell housing - I think the one from Titan Motorsport uses a standard Ford but I'm not sure which.

Be aware that the standard type 9 may not cope with the torque so I would budget for a heay duty one. I'm running a quaiffe HD close ratio, an alternative would be an offering from the likes of BGH (less whine as they use helical gears).

There are some picies in my photo section under Duratec if you interested.

There are other suppliers of Duratec parts.
E.g. Shawspeed, BJP, Titan etc. and I believe that Scholar still have a good deal with new 2.3's.

Yes, it's the 2.3 from Scholar I'm thinking about. My logic is that I can build a half quick 150bhp machine with a nice new reliable engine and then bold on some throttle bodies for 200bhp ish when I get de-sensitised!

I've spent some time browsing www.duratecperformance.co.uk (not posted yet) and picked up snippets. It's just putting it all together that's difficult.

The list of pointers is very helpful.

The 2.3 has 165bhp standard (well, my Mazda6 has!), so it shouldn't be hard to get 200bhp

The 2.3 has 165bhp standard (well, my Mazda6 has!), so it shouldn't be hard to get 200bhp


I thought that the 2.3 was 135bhp @ 5050, and 153lbs/ft of torque @ 3700.

This was according to duratec performance. It maybe wrong. However the details off duratec performance are for the 2.3 ranger model (the one scholar sells), i think that the mazda engine maybe slightly different.

The B2300 (aka Ranger) has a lower compression ratio (9.7:1 vs 10.6:1), and iirc no variable valve timing.

B2300 143bhp - 9.7:1, no vvt, 91RON
Mazda3 153bhp - 9.7:1, vvt, 91RON
Mazda6 163bhp - 10.6:1, vvt, 95RON
