Quick rack conversion
Anyone tell me how difficult/easy it is to convert my Escort Mk2 rack (300 turns lock2lock) into a quick one? Rally Des. do a 2.4 kit - anyone have
experience of these? Thanks, Pewe

You can probably just swap it for an XR2 or XR3 rack which will give you about 2.4 turns IIRC.

1. remove nose cone.
2. undo lock nuts on track rods.
3. raise front wheel; unscrew track rod from track rod end.
4. repeat with other wheel.
5. undo bolt attaching steering column UJ to steering rack
6. undo 4 bolts/nut for steering rack clamps
7. lift rack off chassis (may need to remove front side panels for access).
Fitting is the reverse but put steering wheel in straight ahead position and steering rack in mid way and need to do tracking.

He said it was a quick rack kit, so you left out the bits about cleaning and stripping your existing rack and rebuilding with the new rack and pinion
and setting up the preload etc.
Given the excellent price of Rally Designs complete quick racks, I'd say it was hardly worth bothering with the kits unless you are counting
every penny.

I just received my RD 2.4 quick rack. At RD's pricepoint, breaking down a regular rack and fitting a kits seems like an awful lot of trouble.
The one I received is 'new'. whether it is or not, it'shard to say. It certainly looks new!

yep, get one from Rally Design, cheap as chips, look at the price of a kit and compare to a full rack, cheaper to sell your old rack on here and buy a
new quick one!

He's after a MK2 rack, using a FWD one will steer the wrong way, bit of a nasty shock!

Thanks for the input guys. It looks like a RD rack but 2.4 or 2.9? I'm using an 11" Mountney
s/wheel with 7" boots so I'm concerned about needing biceps the size of Arnie's to turn it at low speed. What do you reckon?

my mountney is 11 inch, I have RD quick rack and wheels are 205; I can turn the steering easily (it is sat on carpet in the garage). Normally you
would turn when driving so it will be easier still.
don't forget that the front is about 1/2 the weight of an small car.
