sierra calipers on cosworth rear

hi all

i am running a rear end from a 2wd cosworth on my rush, but i dont have the rear calipers for them, would the rear calipers from a std sierra fit the lug mounts, i am running 253mm x 10.1mm solid rear discs, i would rather pay the cheaper prices for sierra rear calipers, then cosworth rear calipers.

cheers Alex

Well, yes they use the same spacing between the "ears" but not the same distance from the hub centreline. I presume that just compensates for the disc size, which would suggest that the caliper offsets are the same (logically)

its only the cossie and sierra 4x4 that use the rear vented discs, so surely the rear calipers would be the same for the std sierras and the 2wd cossies, as they both use a rear solid disc?

MK4 Golf calipers fit strangely enough, was going to fit them on mine as a mate had 2 brand new ones he didnt want. But my discs (standard sierra rear) werent big enough, i check the dims of the cossie discs and i think they are 10mm bigger which was just right. But i didnt really want the extra breaking power as i think, what i have is enough.

It probably wont help you unless you come across some cheap MK4 golf calipers.

You could go for smaller discs, brand new discs can be had for £20 a pair (i think) That is probably less than the difference of the cossie calipers over the std ones.

You dont really need that much braking power on the rear anyway, just means you will need to bias the front more.

Just checked www.brakesint.com (great site, go to their online shop and they have drawings and dims for everything)

Dimensions for rear discs

STD RWD Discs are 153x10
Cossie RWD Discs are 173x10
Cossie 4WD Discs are 173 x 20 (Vented)

The standard ones, off a DOHC 2.0l RWD (My donor) are £13.10 a side. Might be cheaper elsewhere, but brakes international are usually pretty good.

Just to reiterate, whether it helps or not I don't know, the difference between the two disc diameters is taken up by the hub carrier "ears" on the 2wd cossie and cossie 4x4 being longer.

im running 253 x 10 solid grooved and drilled on the rear, so they will be fine to run with std sierra rear calipers, so all i need to know now is, where is the cheapest place to get a reconditioned pair, or new, but dont want rusty ones!?

If you are running those discs, plus std sierra calipers, fitted to cossie hub carriers, the calipers won't reach the disc properly, it will be too far out from the hub! (Cossie hub carriers have the caliper mount 10mm further away from the hub centreline)

You need cossie solid discs to reach the caliper surely?

Unless my brain has got friday problems!

the cosworth 4x4 is the only sierra with vented rears - the standard 4x4 rear beam is just a basic disc rear beam with an LSD

you can use the calipers (from memory) but you must use 273mm solid discs with the standard sierra calipers

if you dont have adjustable brake bias (im new to the kit car scene - more from a sierra background) then you must fit the cosworth front otherwise you will have a overbraked rear setup
