silly question...
how do i dismantle the uprights? i need to take the disk out and i think we dont need the metal guard right? but how do i take it out?
i guess i made a mistake when taking the whole upright out of the car without loosening all nuts...
so, how is the disk supposed to come off?

Remove Caliper from upright by two bolts
Remove Wheel Bolts/Nuts
Remove single securing screw (if present) disc should just slide off the hub.

ok thats what i thought, but you see, the nuts must be incredibly tight, so i dont think it will even work on a vice... look like i'll have to
wait for them to be on a car for me to work on them

Try using an impact driver on the small screw, they are not expensive to buy and are really good at schocking out siezed screws.

istr you were chasing cortina (or variant of) uprights of late. as i've never seen a sierra with a disc guard fitted, i presume therefore that
they are cortina.
in which case, the hub needs to be split in order to unbolt the disc from the back of it (big nut behind the grease cap in the centre).
someone with cortina stuff will hopefully divulge a bit more info, if it is infact cortina uprights you have.

I had this problem with mine.
They were off the car and I couldn't get the disc bolts undone.
I split the upright by removing the dustcap, splitpin, cover nut, centre nut etc.
I then put the hub into a drain cover and got a ratchet with a long tube on the end of it. They came undone really easily.
Make sure you've bent down the locking tabs first though!

Description
To remove the calliper, lose the two inner bolts. The best is to use an air-tool for the wheelnuts
Do not split the calliper!!! So don't take the wrong bolts

cheers mates. i do have cortina ones and managed to remove the calliper in one piece. i am now scrounging around for a 27mm cup to loosen the centre
bolt. they came off pretty easily and the whole arrangement doesnt seem too corroded, just surface rust and kak.
thanks for the pic.
big question is, the guard should be removed when using it on the locost right? or should i keep it? its probably there to keep brake dust and water
from going everywhere.
[edit] by the way, t.j. is that a cortina rack i see with shortened track rods? or is it the good ol' escort?

The cntral bolt can easely removed, you don't need any special tool, just remove "split-pen" and take a simple wrench.
The rack isn't good it's a cortina/taunus you need an escort Mk2 rack.
As the disc comes of you can remove the garddisc by three m8 bolts.
