sierra diff noise
Hi all,
Need further advice regarding my horrendous diff noise...
Whilst i have been previously reassured that all diffs make a bit of noise due to being solidly mounted, i cannot take any more of the tortuous noises
coming from mine.
There is a very noticeable rattling/knocking from the diff area when on light throttle/overrun but none on acceleration. In fact it can be felt
through the chassis, it is that bad. It feels to me to be a case of excess backlash in the diff. Can it be adjusted out? It is a sierra 4x4 lsd, by
the way.
Gratefull for any and all advice...
Cheers, Rich.
PS, could it be a driveshaft? doesn't seem to be any excess play but i'm open to suggestions....

sounds very much like my own diff, 3.62 lsd. i have also reached the point of haveing to do something about the noises, really bad on light or
closeing throttle, quiet on full or closed. not sure what i'm going to find though.i don't appear to have loads of backlash etc that would
indicate wear

Mines real noisey too!! too embarising to go through the town sometimes.....clunk...clunk,.,...rattle rattle...
Im thinking of trying a different diff as the gears in it could be really worn.

Check you prop to diff bolts.
Indykids was making the same type of noise, almost like a backlash type thing - but it was the bolts.
Pat...

Must be a quite common thing but bloody hell, it's embarrasing!!! Can't be healthy for the rest of the drivetrain to be absorbing that
vibration either. I suppose that in a car with rubber mountings it would mask the noise a bit but...the thing is, there is no whining or bearing
noise??
Confused!

I recently put a post on about the same thing. The above link was supplied to me by a member of the forum. Whilst it does not cover the LSD part,
it's very informative regards setting up the remainder. I stripped mine down, and found it to be in "as new" condition internaly.
The problem was, with mine, that the planet gears were in need of shimming to the correct tolerance. Not totaly quite now but much better. I also just
tweeked the crown wheel back play a bit, but as I didn't have a dial gauge, it may need a bit more. Will give it another, and better go over the
winter lay up. Hope the above is of some assistance. Regards Ray.
