handbrake hell

I'm really hoping someone can point out where I'm going wrong!! Read as many thread as I can find and none seem to point me in the right direction.

Currently building a 2.0 pinto Indy with rear drum brakes. The brakes are assembled and the handbrake cable run to both rear brakes and cut in the midle in the thin black part ready for rejoining in the transmission tunnel.

Last night I thought i'd have a crack at connecting it up. Out came the Haynes and followed the follwing :
1) pumped foot brake several times which apprently sets the self adjuster in each drum.
2) Off Haynes now as of course your new cable isn't normally cut in half. Joined ends together using 3 bulldog clips as seen featured on several threads.
3) attempted to get the small platic plungers mounted in the rear of the back plates to rotate freely and have about 0.5m movement by adjusting the handbrake adjuster knurled knob. Ended up with about 42 of the outher sheath inside the tunnel but plunger wouldn't turn and cable joined with bulldogs had gone slack.

Apparently these plungers show that your shoes aren't sticking out too much and cause brake bind. Could anyone be kind enough to go through this procedure as if nothing has been done so I can see where I'm going wrong as I don't see how to get these plungers rotatinf freely and at the same time keep the tension in the cable joined by the bulldogs.

I also don't get how adjusting only one side tensioners both rear brakes equally? if anyone could shed light on that i'd be graetful as the more I tried to work out how the system worked the more bafled i was.

I've seen several posts saying how easy it was so any laymans descriptions of how it's done as my three braincells are starting to hurt.

Sorry for the lengthy post but in the past i've neglected to put in info which would allow people to help.

Dunno, I just put mine together with the adjusters backed right off, connected the cable up. Pumped the pedal a couple of times *hard* then adjusted the cable after. Seems to be ok to me, certainly doesnt bind and the handbrake works ok. Not even looked at the plungers...

I know thats not much help, but it should be that easy.

I agree with FM- doing it that way worked fine for me. On discs mind, though it shouldn't change things.... Do the adjusting last...

Ive got discs on mine,but the principle is the same for drums,but you better not cutting the cable in the middle,a neater way of doing it is to buy a handbrake cable end,you then just cut one end off the handbrake cable,thread it through into position,cut it to the required length,and then reconnect the new cable end sercured with grub screws.

Or silver solder the end on or take the cable to your local yacht chandler who is used to crimping things on wires so they don't come off or even weld the end on. I don't like the join in the middle. The loop of cable should be free running through the handbrake yoke/quadrant thingy.
