recon or not?

Been thinking about my donor brake calipers, which i have front and back.
should i trade my old ones in for some new recon ones? (more money)
How can i tell if my old units work ok without having them on a car?

Am i just worring about nothing?

How has everyone else got on with there donor brakes?

Very unsure what to do?

Help!

I would not rush to replace them now. Wait till your brakes are ready to be connected and try them out. If the piston and seals look ok then all should be fine. To clean them up plug the pipe holes up and give them a good scub and scrape. Then paint them with about 3 coats of caliper paint. Rear ones should move freely on the slider and the little boots should be sound. It's amazing what you can do with a little effort.

Am i just worring about nothing? yes

I will use old ones for building and fitting but will probably get recons before hitting the road.

I started off using the original ones having cleaned them up a bit. Needless to say I only drove 15 miles on them before I bought some new recon ones. As others have said they could potentialy save your life one day - is it really worth scimping on them???
Why not go half way and recon tem urself with new seals etc? Oli.

Why not get a refurb kit and do it yourself. Calipers aren't really rocket science. However they don't like to be left too long without use - so at the very least, move the pistons once a week.

Brakes

Check Ebay for Calipers, I bought a pair of recon rear calipers for £37, still in the box and complete with new dust caps etc.

Front are not so common and make sure you get the right ones, but they are available.

You can get rebuild kits from speed shack £14.95 (for two calipers)
Or do as i did...
rebuilt 1 caliper,on the second ...broke a bl#@dy piston
So went and got a set of wilwoods
they weigh less than 1 half of the old m16

If it doesn't fit MODIFY it!!

I got nicely refur'd ones from Kitfit. Much better job than I could do and at least it gives me piece of mind- but then I don't do structural welding either for the same reason..... I leave mission critical stuff for other people!!!
I'd worry I hadn't done the brakes properly and might only find out the hard way.... At least I can monitor my non structural welds for a while to check my weld intergrity before going onto the important stuff- can't think a way of testing out my brake rebuilding capabilities....

Been looking at a set of willwoods which are going to be fairly expensive for front and back and just wondered how much of an improvement are the willwoods over new or recon standard sierra calipers on a 7?

Is it only on the track i will notice the difference?

Cheers

I went for new Raceleda calipers at the front and refurbed rears at the back.
I didn't see the point of spending a fortune on rear calipers at build time, when I can get hold of some matching racleda rears I will
