Zetec Engine Number

I can not find an engine number on my 1800cc zetec. Do I need one or can I make one up to inform the DVLA of an engine change?
I know the previous registration number and wondered if the DVLA would supply the engine number but
I'm a bit worried about opening up a can of worms by telling them there is no number on the engine.
Any advice?
Bill.

There must be a number somewhere unless its brand new.

Its on the flat bit on the exhaust side near the gear box. Usually really faint.

search on here; location of engine nuymebr on zetec was asked yesterday; if it is not there, and the part can rust so efven if it was, it may no longer be readable.

Ford will not give you a number.

If you can get registration doc for vehicle, then the engine number is like the chassis number but differes in some digits (or it was like that for the older Fords).

Checked the previous posts. That's what started me looking. The engine is out of a 72 'J' reg XR3i which has been cut up and scrapped. The previous owner is long gone and I have no paper work. I have scraped the paint of the usual places but still no number. It could be rusted off.

Left hand side of the engine looking from Rear on the edge of the flange for the gear box down near the Starter location (for type nine) Can be a pig to See

TIP take a digital photo of it as the SVA may may not be able to read it .

Or as my tester suggested
Personally I would have qround that down and re-stamped it to make it clear. That is nearly impossible to read

Just make sure
1) Letter from Ford corrseponds to the Number
2) The number is genuine
3) the number relates to the engine
4) the number is not stolen or already in existance

DVLA were happy to register my car without an engine number but i stood my ground and had it included as it was there. They said no engine number is OK for them. SVA would have been an issue though for proving age.

Mad4x4, I've rubbed the flange shiney and still nothing.
It looks like I'll try to register without a number since it has worked for others.

Try

looking on the head by the thermostat. I have the engine number stamped there as well. With my engine coming out of an escort, tThe number was also stamped in a flange parellel with the sump. On the same side as the exhaust. I have posted a picture in my section. Hope this helps.
