making wider steering rack arms?
anyone know how?
is welding extensions into the arms, and then perhaps welding a tight fitting steel tube sleeve over the top an option?
i've seen extension bars thats screw onto the ends, but for the extra length needed only being about 2inches on each arm, i'm not sure
this is possible, plus i've got a cortina rack

Welded track rods are a definate no no, instant MOT failure.
I made a pair of extentions from some 20mm hex bar i had laying around. Only an option if you have a lathe handy though...

replace the cortina ones with?

i cant understand why mot testers cant pass welded arms - that implies there are no competent welders out there! I welded mine and used it on many
trackdays, before the desire for an MOT made me change it to threaded extentions.
You can chop a few inches off your steering arms so that you have more space for a threaded extention to fit. This is what i did.

that makes sense. what did you do? cut them back by a few inches, re-thread the arms and then make screw on extensions?
my dad asked if you could shift the rac over a few inches, so i'd only need to extend on one side. I guess though that make have some effect on
the steering when one wheel is in compression, what with the length of each arm being being different

Just buy some arm extensions, mine were 20 quid from the "old" Luego.
And yeah, just lop the end of existing arms if too long and tidy thread. Do it so they don't get overheated when cutting.
Don't move the rack from central as it will (given the 3 secs of thought I just put into it) upset bump steer characteristics of car.
MK, Luego, GTS amongst others will have them, I don't doubt.

I've just been through this with my build. I ended up cutting 40mm off each side and then recut the thread. I then used some extensions to give
me the correct length.
clicky
Hope this helps
"just like that !"

I got the extentions from MK and thought they were too dodgy to use!! and welded it up instead... BO$£$OCKS!

I thought the track rods had a rolled thread, so the diameter would be too small to cut a decent thread with a die?

they do as far as i remember, i just chopped an inch off and used the remaining thread. You could probably retap (re-die?) to m12 instead of m14
though.

grrr, had a whole big reply typed out and when submitting i realised i was about to make a new thread...
anyway, the jist of it was, how good were ford at making their parts fairly standard? for example will Granada arms fit the cortina rack (assuming
they're any longer, which they probably arent...) or Transit arms with a new M14 thread cut on them?
I know what ford were like when the 1st and second transits came out, basically using car suspension and engines (like the essex V6) so its perhaps an
option.
I'd rather go the replacing route, than chopping the arms up and possibly being worse off after i make a mess of it (I'm like that you
see...)
anyone know where i might be able to find technical info on this? my local ford dealer were next to useless when i asked for Cortina steering rack
mountings. the man looked at me blankly

just ordered some extensions from rally design. problem is, they don't mention on there how much they extend by. knowing my luck they'll
make it too long...
does this mean i'll now need 4 lock nuts on the rack?
