finished the back to my pedal box complete with a coat of paint

Not sure about the New book but certainly on others I would think about pedal stops at this stage rather than when it's in the car.

Ideally an adjustable stop so you can fine tune the pedal position. Brake needs one to stop it falling forward, clutch to stop it going too far and the accelerator needs also a stop to stop it going too far.

Needs large fillets/webs welded between the brake pedal pivot and the master cylinder mounting to make it stiffer.

If it isn't stiff enough you will get a spongey pedal and lack of feel from the brakes.
