Do I need an oil filter!
Of course I am joking
I have hit a snag - I have fitted the oil filter and now I can't get the steering column to fit as it fouls the filter
I am assuming its a sierra column/rack. I can't change the angle of the rack as it is mounted with the bushes etc.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any ideas on how to get around this?
With the filter removed and the column in its correct position and rack orientation, I have a 50mm gap between the filter housing and the column. The
filter is 90mm deep thus the issue
If I run without the filter it will at least lubricate the externals....
Thanks in advance,
John

or you can mount it remotely. though the smaller filter will be cheaper

Remote filter - that's how I need to do it with the Sylva. Easiest option and it's very cool looking mounted next to your oil cooler

thats what i meant to ask....but thought it a bit obvious.
So, just a smaller filter will suffice, yes?

OK, so if I go remote how on earth do I do that?
Have you got details on how you did it/do it?

You screw an adapter head onto where the filter normally goes. Two hose go to the remote filter which you mount somewhere convenient.
A far better solution than a filter which just happens to fit into the gap IMHO.

What car and engine hve you got mate?
If youv got a zetec in a 7 most people fit either a fiesta filter or a renault 5 filter. The renault one is nice and stumpy.

I had a good look around for a decent filter for my Zetec. All the usual suspects were just that - suspect eg using a Renault 5 filter which is M20 on
a 3/4" ford oil filter thread - no thanks. I ended up using a short but fat filter from a Ford XR4x4 V6 / Cossie 2WD. Ford oil filter code EFL
298.
But with 50mm to spare I'd follow the advice of a Mr Zilspeed - WHATEVER ENGINE!

Yep me again
Just looking on this site that Steve (worx) has given me and just ordering the bits I need for the remote.
Do the two pipes just simply fit between the sandwich plate and the filter head thus oil flowing through? Is it really that simple?

I would check the depth of the take off plate for the remote filter 1st, i tried this and still found there was not enough room.
Idealy for me if the engine could be pulled back 2 or 3"s the problem would be solved but i had no room and didnt really want to redesign the
tunnel area for the bell of the gearbox.
I found a shorter filter FRAM PH4546 which i believe is from a renault 11 from the 80's, but the part number would be good enough.

Thanks Bob, thats a nice diddy one
I take it you are changing the oil more often now but that isnt a big problem as I would be changing after each track day anyway
Not had any oil circulation issues I take it?
Thanks again,
John

I did ask a few people about oil changes, since i dont rack up anywhere near 2000 miles a year and dont track i'm not going to have a problem.
In fact if i had to change oil twice a year it wouldnt be the end of the world.

You need the sandwich plate, the pipes and the remote filter housing.
I have one for sale for £50.00 + postage, completely brand new never used - with about 1 metre of piping x2
I'm changing my engine so wont need it now.
Cheers,
Murray
