Upgrading front brakes

Firstly, will i need to upgrade them

I have the standard single piston cortina type things on solid disks.

Was thinking of putting bigger wheels on, so was also thinking of putting bigger vented disk and either re-bracketing the original calipers or changing them.

Not wanting to go down the expensive line brembo and alike, thinking more like more modern ford vented setup.

and ideas ?

I dont know much about your car but if its light and you dont want to spend too much then just go for pads, hard lines and fluid. If you go bigger vented disks and ford calipers you will be doubling the weight of the brakes and unsprung weight for not a lot more stopping power.

I second that - stick with solid discs. They are lighter and warm up quicker which is better for road use. If you need to improve the braking then you can just put larger discs on and make adaptor plates as you say, or go for one of the four-pot conversion kits available, which are much lighter than your M16s.

I am just in the middle of upgrading a Sylva Phoenix front brake setup.
We have used 260 x 22 vented disks, Hi spec calipers, race leda hubs and disk bells I make my self. The set up is 6Kg per corner lighter and all fits in a 13" wheel. We tested it all out yesterday and all was fine. No problem with getting any heat into it even in all that rain. Rescued attachment Photo-0095.jpg

I'm sure my Cortina callipers have two pistons.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

I thought that, but I think he means 1 piston on each side of the caliper - unlike Sierra calipers that only have one piston.

I'd stick with the M16 calipers for now and just try some decent EBC Green Stuff or Mintex pads and see what it's like.

Next step would be 4 pots like hi-spec or willwoods, but I'd still retain the standard solid discs.

Pat...

Mintex 1144 (for road use) Ferodo ds2500 as well, both brilliant pads, but need bedded in and a little heating.

Suck it a see --- honestly.

How much heat the front brakes get depends on a lot of things one of which is driver habits.
Some drivers can bake a set of pads going to the supermarket.

Because of the engine and bodywork your car is going to be more demanding on front brakes than a book locost.

Options using production parts are

As is but with decent pads Mintex M144 or Green Stuff.

As above but with Capri 2.8i vented discs and caliper spacers.

Sell the Cortina bits Convert the front end to Sierra parts.

That's the point, you need some heat to make more efficient. If you get too much heat into vented, they generally warp.

I'd stick with solid, then groove and drilled then maybe only maybe vented. Vented are too heavy as it is basically two disc's in one.

Stick some mintex Extreme in if they do them. Great pads in my type R. Not a fan of EBC.

Just finshed race meeting at Silverstone in the dry and no problem with disc's ( lack of or to much heat ) and the whole corner weight is 6.5 Kg just over 1/2 the weight of the standard set up. Saved 12 Kg of unspung weight.

Hi not me driving unfortunatly ( not that any one really wants to drive at silverstone )

But Darryl and Steve. Not the best of days for them after testing friday at lap record times all day. Problems crept in during qualify and race.

41 is that the green car used to the Wards car.

cheers matt

Yes I think so. A chap called Darren has it now just started racing this season.

We went testing on sat at brunt to test new brake set up got very wet but at least the brakes got a easy time to start with before the race on Sunday. I was a bit shocked to see him down in 17th as he looked like he was going well in qualifying. But it was his 1st time at silverstone and the car is back in 1 piece this time.
