Driveshaft gaitors
I'm sure this must be a common problem!
The rubber gaitors on my Sierra donor driveshafts have split. I bought a boot replacement kit, but can't see how you get the new boot on
without getting the joint apart, which I also can't see how you get apart.
Any help much appreciated!

You can buy split boots universal.... but their a bit crap.
Taking the driveshaft out, is the best way to do it.....
There probably is a Cir-clip (sp?) holding the shaft into the CV.... I'll just check the haynes for you !

Nope,
You cut the metal sleeve off with a hacksaw! Then in the service kit (Ford jobbie) theres a new one that you fit after and swage the end over. Is all
in the Haynes.

Yeh, just checked the haynes....... it's a bit of a long job.... it's best you get a haynes manual and follow it !!!
Cutting a metal sleeve off it is such a crappy way... typical Ford lol

If you get the service kit from Ford you get the gaitor, sleeve, clips and grease.
Its not too bad a job to do, I did both ends of both shafts in a morning. You do need the manual though, didn't someone have it on CD?
It is possible to get universal gaitors that strech over the driveshaft from a motor factors. Worth a look?

Eddie is doing it on CD, just about to send off for it... He's got a newer version of the manual i got

I thought that might be the final answer.
Thing is though, how much is 4 repair kits from Ford???
And why do the TW*TTY motor factors sell useless repair kits without the metal sleeve?
I think my best option is to get another set of shafts from my local scrappy for £15 each.

i stripped an reconned my shafts a coupla weeks ago, strange tho, one of my gaiters was atatched to the pressed steel protector, and the 3 were normal
ones that clip around a flange. i didnt need the manual tho, you just undo the 6 bolts, take of the circlip at each end and slide out the shaft, put
the gaiters onto the shaft followed by the metal protectors, (i clipped my gaiters to the protectors before moving them into position so there was
more room to put the grease in) then bolt em in place again. but the metal bits are availabe sperate from the gaiters, i used universal super stretchy
motaquip gaiters and original ford protectors (had to buy 2 cos 1 was atatched permanantly to a gaiter and the other had been given an almight wack by
the driveshaft.
the protectors were about 3 or 4 quid each i think. dotn think i have the receipt anymore so cant tell you the part number.
will have a look tho.

Are your driveshafts fitted with Lobro joints (sounds like it if you are able to ubolt them) or Tripode CV joints?

yep they are lobro. my pug has tripod ones tho, not sure if they are the same but there are 2 types. on one the end bit slides off the tripod (be
carefull you dont loos the bearing cos theyre a bugger to put back on), and the tripod is held on with a circlip. and the other is a compression
circlip where you have to whack the joint off the end, and hammer it back on with a new clip (just sits in a groove and the inner of the joint has a
groove that it engages to)
