zx12 lumpy running

my 12 has decided to play silly buggers
it will not start now unless you have your foot on the throttle
the plugs are really sooty black
but it hasn't been for a run yet its only ever been left ticking over in the garage
should i worry or wait until its had a run then worry??

thank you for any replies

Sounds like it has only been run in cold start mode (full enrichment) probably needs a careful full temperature range run (ie a dam good thrashing to clear it out)

Wait till youve thrashed hell out of it, probably running very rich on tickover, bike plugs are very sensitive things to, they like to be in tip top condition.

before I passed my bike test I just rode my bike up my mum and dads path, which is about ....20ft long.

Did it for a full evening a few times and had a similar problem.

Just needs a good de-sooting - which occurs at about 120mph.....

so you all think the scientific way of fixing the problem is to thrash it until it bleeds!!

now thats my kind of repair
thank you folks

I had the same problem just before my first SVA. I belive the problem was sticking injectors as the engine had been stood for two years. The cure for me was to strip down the fuel injection and clean with carb cleaner. Also check the four clips that fix the throttle bodies to the manifold as you could be pulling in air if losse. The other silly mistake I made was to fit a vacum hose to both the inlet pressure sensor and the atmospheric sensor. The only time these should have the same pressure is when the engine is NOT running. So make sure no hose is attached to the atmospheric sensor.
